Help explaining the draft?

Ever since the cavs got a draft pick from the kings i dont understand what that means. Can you explain how "The draft pick is protected the next six years. It will be lottery protected next year and protected in the top 13 in 2013, the top 12 in 2014 and the top 10 in the following three years" works?
